The moon reading — focusing on COVID-19. The reading revolves around “What will be the outcome of this crisis”. The “you” in the reading relates to the entire human race. Card meanings have been adapted from “The Ultimate Guide to Tarot”. Read my thoughts on the outcome — and let me know yours!

The Moon Spread — What lies beneath

Card 1: Significator — a card that represents “you”

Eight of Cups

Key meanings

  • Departure, change, and emotional intelligence

Upright meaning: The Eight of Cups reveals a time of restlessness and can feel as tho something is missing. From the outside, work and relationships appear harmonious. Your intuition is nagging you. The result may be a departure. Traditionally the Eight of Cups predicts you leave a situation or break an agreement that no longer fulfills you. Do not make this decision lightly or quick — only move on when you are sure that there is no more you are able to gain or contribute to the situation. When the timing is right, there is less drama than you would expect — naturally, you will feel sadness but with little regret.

It is now time to go with the flow. You will soon feel energized to move on to where your interests and curiosity call. You will soon feel content. This card turns up in a reading to show you have already left a situation emotionally, and action will follow as you now take leave physically. This card predicts time to travel, explore physically or through a spiritual journey.

Card 2: What needs to be addressed — past issues

Nine of Swords

Key meanings

  • Anxiety

Upright meaning: This card is considered the “3 a.m. card” because of the anxiety level it brings with it. It’s what wakes you up worrying in the middle of the night. This card shows you dealing with high levels of anxiety. You may have suffered an illness and the resulting low energy or a shock or buildup of minor stresses that begin to disrupt your sleep patterns and peace of mind. External events may have triggered the initial stress, however, the issue now is how you are responding to it.

The Nine of Swords can reflect unhappiness in key areas of your life which may cloud your usually positive attitude. The card can also indicate the habit of worry. You may be worrying about inconsequential things that don’t warrant your attention. Thankfully, this feeling and patterns are temporary. This card can show up related to work to express that there is too much on your plate. It can also indicate mental health issues associated with anxiety, such as panic disorder, depression, insomnia, and nightmares.

Card 3: What needs to be addressed — present challenges or fears

Five of Rings (Pentacles)

Key Meanings

  • A test of resources

Upright Meaning: Traditionally, this card means financial loss. It can mean the loss of a job, relationship, or experiencing other financial or emotional hardships. The positive aspect of the Five of Rings is that you will find support from others in a similar position. These contacts may become good friends whom you may never have met in your usual circumstances. If you consider new options, you may discover other resources or approaches that will help you find a way forward.

However, this card often comes up in readings to show fear of poverty and isolation rather than actual poverty. It commonly shows the fear of losing the security of a home and/or the aftermath of an ended relationship where one partner may feel alone or depleted. This card occasionally reveals the impact of bereavement. Tarot cards do not predict death, however, this five shows the feelings of sadness as a result of losing someone close.

Card 4: Outcome

Six of Swords

Key Meanings

  • Moving on

Upright Meaning: The Six of Swords shows you moving on from a situation or relationship and enjoying a period of peace and harmony. This may manifest more mentally rather than physically as you take a more detached approach, distancing yourself from drama and complications. This gives you an opportunity to rest and recharge. This may even lead you to explore a new environment or make a spiritual discovery.

In work, this card can show you traveling. In relationships, this card shows two people spending time apart. More negatively this shows a relationship ending. However, this ending may be positive or negative depending on the situation.

On a more literal note, this card can show taking a break from work or your usual environment. You may travel, possibly on a trip overseas. This card can suggest a major move for two or more people.

Deciphering this spread

This spread was a very interesting one for me to do. I was asked by a friend to see what my cards would say about the current situation we all find ourselves in. While the question brought to me was originally for timelines around this COVID-19 issue my spread took me in a different direction.

I have felt that, as a collective, we are moving into a new way of being. I don’t believe there will be the same sense of “normalcy” as many people are hoping for once this is over. Honestly, I don’t think we should go back to the same-old-same-old. Our Earth needs the heal, the human race needs to heal as well as grow. How can we expect to ever thrive and ascend if we continue to live as we always have been?

This is clearly a time for change and reflection. As reading points out, and I think we can all agree, the human race as a whole needs to heal from the anxiety-ridden burden we have found ourselves in. It is clear we will suffer a financial and economic loss from this, as many of us are already experiencing. I don’t get the feeling that this will last for an extended period of time — it will only last until we are able to come together to support one another.

We are being forced to stay at home. We are being forced to sit with ourselves, our thoughts, our emotions. We are forced to limit shopping, eating out, live entertainment, travel, etc. So why not embrace this change? Let’s embrace these thoughts and emotions. Let’s learn how to really love again, really appreciate what we have and realize what we don’t need. Let’s clean our minds, our bodies, and our plant all at the same time and come out of this stronger and more united.
